HERE’S HOW...

One of the BIGGEST challenges when you have a newborn, is getting them to sleep someplace safe. And we get it. Everyone’s exhausted and desparate for sleep. We’ve been there!

Here are 5 steps to transition your newborn from your arms to their bassinet easily:

1️⃣ Swaddle baby, offer a pacifier if they like one, and hold them in a side or stomach position while making a “shush” noise and gently swinging baby back and forth in your arms. Do this until baby is very drowsy.

2️⃣ Alternatively, if baby doesn’t soothe using step one, you can wear baby snuggly in a wrap or carrier to get them to a very drowsy state.

3️⃣ While shushing, gently place your swaddled baby on their back in their crib or bassinet.

4️⃣ Place your hand gently but firmly on baby’s chest and belly, shushing more, as you lessen your touch and sound gradually to help baby fall fully asleep on their own instead of in your arms.

5️⃣ Practice! The more consistent you are with this, the easier baby will fall asleep on their own.

First, wake baby up at the same time every morning. This will keep bedtime from being pushed too late.

Second, follow an EASY routine!

E - eat - feed baby upon waking
A - activity - tummy time, stroller walk, fresh air and natural light

Follow an EASY routine!

The skill of connecting sleep cycles is something all newborns have to learn. If baby learns to connect their sleep cycles without being fed to sleep, many babies will be able to sleep up to a solid 6 hour stretch at night by 6 weeks old.

Around 6 - 8 weeks, you can start working on an EASY routine.

🔥 What we ARE focusing on is establishing a healthy sleep foundation so that your newborn only wakes to eat, then falls right back to without you needing to spend the next hour pacing the house to get them back to sleep.

So if we were to do it all again, here’s what we would do:

1️⃣ Practice the pause - newborn sleep is noisy! And active sleep often can look like your newborn is awake when they’re not. Allow baby a few minutes to resettle before you rush to settle them, which may actually result in waking them up.

2️⃣ Practice putting baby down awake in their crib or bassinet and shush patting to sleep.

3️⃣ Follow and eat, play, sleep (or EASY) routine.

4️⃣ Practice the first nap of the day in the crib.

Sample thirty minute bedtime routine

❤️Bath (5-7 minutes), diaper or potty, PJs, brush teeth
🧡Get silly - 5 min energized play
💛Get calm - 1-2 books, final liquid feed (if still breast or bottle feeding), and snuggles
💚Sleep sack on if in crib
💙In crib or bed fully awake, lights off, white noise on, final goodnight.

A consistent bedtime and nap routine helps to calm your child, allows for connection time, and signals to your little one what’s going to happen next is sleep time.

The goal of a bedtime routine is connection, get out any pent up wiggles and energy in toddlers and young children, and provide an opportunity to wind down before saying goodnight. Bedtime routine should take no more than 15 minutes after bath, teeth, potty and jammies are complete. Remember, it’s never too early or too late to start implementing a sleep routine.

Is bedtime feeling like an endless uphill battle with your overtired toddler? 🌙✨ You’re definitely not alone. Try this one simple trick to make those nightly struggles easier and turn bedtime into a more enjoyable routine for both of you! 🛏️💤

Sleep begets sleep.

An overtired infant or toddler:

- has a harder time falling asleep and staying asleep,
- may take shorter naps
- will wake up earlier in the morning (think before 6am)
- may wake up multiple times overnight
- may take a longer time to fall asleep for naps and bedtime
- and will often wake 1-2 hours after falling asleep, asleep at bedtime

The SIMPLEST thing you can do in this situation is to move bedtime EARLIER.

A healthy bedtime for an infant or toddler is between 6 to 8 PM depending on the quality of sleep that day.

Bedtime should always be a moving target, adjusted 15 to 30 minutes earlier (sometimes more) it your infant or toddler does not get an age appropriate amount of daytime sleep that day.

Again, sleep begets sleep.

If your little one is struggling with any of the things that I mentioned above, take a look at what time they’re going to bed.

And of course, if your infant or toddler is not able to fall asleep independently yet, that will a factor in quality of overnights as well.

HERE’S WHAT I MEAN…

The term “cry it out” or CIO has become synonymous with sleep training. But in the sleep training world, CIO actually refers to the extinction method.

The extinction method is when you put your baby down for sleep, walk out and shut the door, and do not return until morning, no matter how hard or how long they cry for.

This is NOT a method we teach because as moms, we never felt comfortable using this with our own children.

The methods we use allow you to remain responsive and supportive of your child throughout the entire sleep training process, and are adaptable to fit your family’s comfort level.

Does this mean there won’t be crying? No, because crying is a natural response to change in routine. And our children are not robots.

The first thing I teach my clients and Playbook students is to BE CONSISTENT.

Here’s why 👇🏻

If you want your little one to sleep independently and THROUGH THE NIGHT...

You have to stop confusing them.

Here’s what I mean ...

• Infants and toddlers thrive on consistency and routine

• Their little bodies thrive when naps and bedtime occur at the same time every day

• They need this CONSISTENCY from you

🤓 So, you changing their sleep schedule every day by following wake windows instead of a set schedule, OR by responding differently each time they’re supposed to be asleep but are awake...

You’re actually creating a lot of confusion for them. “Do I fall asleep on my own this time? Sometimes when I cry mom comes and rocks me to sleep, but other times she checks in on me and I stay in my crib, but other times she takes me out to the sofa and we fall asleep watching TV...”

See how confusing that could be?

And GUESS WHAT??

👎🏼 It doesn’t empower your little one at all - it only sets a confusing expectation around sleep

You have to help them gain CONFIDENCE that they can fall asleep on their own. But if you keep responding differently every time you give them an opportunity to try...it’s only making it harder for them.

😌 Be consistent.

When you show your infant or toddler a CONSISTENT RESPONSE to sleep and follow a CONSISTENT SCHEDULE, it makes it so much EASIER for them to fall asleep on their own, take a longer nap, and sleep through the night.

Consistency = better sleep

If you want your little one to sleep independently and THROUGH THE NIGHT...

You have to stop confusing them.

Here’s what I mean ...

• Infants and toddlers thrive on consistency and routine

• Their little bodies thrive when naps and bedtime occur at the same time every day

• They need this CONSISTENCY from you

🤓 So, you changing their sleep schedule every day by following wake windows instead of a set schedule, OR by responding differently each time they’re supposed to be asleep but are awake...

You’re actually creating a lot of confusion for them. “Do I fall asleep on my own this time? Sometimes when I cry mom comes and rocks me to sleep, but other times she checks in on me and I stay in my crib, but other times she takes me out to the sofa and we fall asleep watching TV...”

See how confusing that could be?

And GUESS WHAT??

👎🏼 It doesn’t empower your little one at all - it only sets a confusing expectation around sleep

You have to help them gain CONFIDENCE that they can fall asleep on their own. But if you keep responding differently every time you give them an opportunity to try...it’s only making it harder for them.

😌 Be consistent.

When you show your infant or toddler a CONSISTENT RESPONSE to sleep and follow a CONSISTENT SCHEDULE, it makes it so much EASIER for them to fall asleep on their own, take a longer nap, and sleep through the night.

Consistency = better sleep
